I figure every 20something garage band figures this out really fast--the drummer can make or break your sound. I'm not deeply in this world, but even from the edges I see that good drummers are constantly swamped with requests for collaboration, more than singers, guitarists, or even bassists. Related: one of my favorite books is Taft, by Ann Patchett, about a blues drummer.
