Welp, I finally saw the Odyssey tonight. Nolan is a whole thing, isn’t he? Wants audio to be uncomfortable, believes color is offensive except in very small and relatively dark doses. Has never seen a smile before. Is so afraid someone might break the fourth wall that actors are not allowed to ever look at the camera. I have regularly thought of the movies of his I have watched. But I am not sure I have ever *enjoyed* them, or thought them good movies? Memento was probably the one that haunts me most, and was “best”. Oppenheimer was maybe “better”, but I never ever think about it. As to the Odyssey…? I dunno. Four stars? People who like this kind of movie will like it. It was a lot, and sometimes that’s enough. A faithful reproduction of the story it was not. A fundamentally interesting and/or good movie it was not. But it was a spectacle. I can’t say I enjoyed any part of it, and there were many parts I was overwhelmed and had to look away ( #actuallyautistic). And I literally plugged my ears through the climax because fuck you Nolan you don’t get to make me suffer what are you an ambulance? No. I’d call it a huge swing and a base hit. And i am *definitely* giving it higher marks just because it has made so many more people interested in the original classics. (One of my kids is absolutely *incensed* that the movie conflated Helios and Apollo. “Apollo does *not have cattle*!” I’m raising them right!)
