Let me stop you there. Open-source is a multi-billion dollar industry. Capital long ago ruined that too. Professional expectations on an amateur field. It's been the norm for a very long time.

The inflection point for "tech was cooked" was really around the point the Unix wars began and proprietary OSes became the norm and not the exception. So basically: late 80's/early 90's.
