A plaque on Montrose Street in Glasgow (near its corner with Ingram Street) marking the original location of the Glasgow School of Art. The school was founded here in 1845 as the Glasgow Government School of Design, but changed its name to the Glasgow School of Art in 1853. In 1869, it moved to the McLennan Galleries in Sauchiehall Street, before moving to a new purpose-built building on Renfrew Street designed by former student Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1899. This Mackintosh building grew to become one of the best-loved and most-admired buildings in the city, but it was badly damaged by a fire in 2014. Just as restoration had finished in 2018, it was again damaged by an even worse fire, which left as little more than a shell. Due to delays in insurance pay-outs, work to restore it again has yet to be started, and it's currently unclear if a full restoration will financially viable without substantial external funding.
