@fxk8y@furry.engineer the ones installed in walls in the bathroom are probably the ones you're thinking of.
The bigger box ones installed centrally with ducts that also go to the toilet and other places around the house, are permanently on and part of the ventilation system to keep the house free of CO2, and dry, also behind the walls.
You cannot turn these off without unplugging them at their installation site; the house may have a button that makes them run faster, but they never turn off entirely.

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz thanks for the clarifaction! I installed such units while I did vocational training as an electrician, at least here in germany this is how I call it "new house stuff", as I've never lived in anything built y2k onwards. So no real life knowledge in this regard. Btw. somewhat adjacent to the original post: For the very same reason I'm trying to push family and friends towards using (kilo) joules instead of kcal IRL. Makes things so much more comparable, like "this hamburger could run my notebook for a week" is only one simple multiplication ahead :)
