@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz thanks for the clarifaction! I installed such units while I did vocational training as an electrician, at least here in germany this is how I call it "new house stuff", as I've never lived in anything built y2k onwards. So no real life knowledge in this regard. Btw. somewhat adjacent to the original post: For the very same reason I'm trying to push family and friends towards using (kilo) joules instead of kcal IRL. Makes things so much more comparable, like "this hamburger could run my notebook for a week" is only one simple multiplication ahead :)

    @fxk8y@furry.engineer They're mandatory in modern housing, that's why I was referring to it, it's easy to confuse it with the wall fans though! Also, cursed maybe, but you could also use watt-hours, it's easier to calculate with if you're using electrical devices (usage * time), and it's basically the same as kilocalories already :P https://mastodon.derg.nz/@anthropy/115056550811618742
