"There's no way the United States can afford Universal Healthcare, it would cost more than all the taxes we could possibly collect!" Perhaps that is because healthcare in this country -- for some reason -- routinely costs 3ร—-5ร— more than it does anywhere else!

  • @codinghorror@infosec.exchange Your sources take into account that the socialist country is subsidizing it. So, 'somebody' is paying, just not the guy getting the work done. This is first order thinking. It's why most people shouldn't vote. They cannot abstract and project their mind beyond the immediate thing right in front of them. "Government force payment small." It's midwittery.

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange worth noting the UK figures here are the cost of private insurance claims. All those would be available for $0 on NHS. The cost to the NHS is about 75% the prices shown here but they don't really publish figures because there's no bill for anyone.

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange I think healthcare in the US is expensive because of government interference. Lift the regulations, and a doctor could treat you inexpensively right on the street. ๐Ÿ˜

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange What kind of profit margins do US insurers have? In Poland, the state-owned insurer has a 4% margin.

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange The average life expectancy in the United States is about 79.5 years, while in Russia it's about 73.7 years. Do you still want affordable healthcare?๐Ÿ™‚

  • @codinghorror@infosec.exchange I try not to "reply guy" to everything like this with MMT. It is a struggle so I'll use my allocated one this quarter on you. I have been reading the literature, listening to the MMT podcast. The basic gist is that any country that issues it's own currency can always afford anything in that currency. They don't spend what they collect in taxes, they spend what they spend and that CREATES the money. The taxes are to a) reduce the money supply and b) create a need for the currency. Anything arms of the US government say is too expensive is something the various players don't want to spend money on. As noted, if they want to bail out the banks to the tune of a trillion dollars it just happens with almost no debate. If they want to bomb a country, it just happens. Only things that benefit the masses generate this hand wringing fiscal conservatism.

  • @codinghorror@infosec.exchange Let's not forget, there is a higher tendency to recommend surgery when there is a financial incentive. A perfect example is ACL reconstruction; it's not always needed or leads to better outcome in none athletic adults yet it's done far more often in the US compared to my country, Sweden

  • @codinghorror@infosec.exchange the US started diverging from the rest of the developed world around 1980. Who could have imagined Reagan's "Greed is good" ethos would lead to wide-scale looting in the health care sector? /s https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/life-expectancy-vs-health-expenditure?time=earliest..latest
