@ariadne@social.treehouse.systems yeah, I'm coming to that conclusion now.
Last year pixelfed.social had 250k new people join in a week, briefly becoming the largest MAU fediverse server.
It was chaos, and thankfully I over engineered a few things, I was able to run it on $2k of digitial ocean droplets (one app server + redis and one db server).
php and mysql is boring, but it's scalable and pretty performant

@dansup@mastodon.social that's my point, i don't think fedi nodes should be so large that you need to start thinking seriously about reliability engineering
