i found something i've actually been meaning to get for a while now. it's a composite and S-video video switch that lets you swap between up to four different video sources. i got it for my old consoles so i wouldn't have to keep swapping out cables on my TV. it only does composite and not S-video, so i'm only really using it for composite output. interestingly it doesn't actually have its own power source, it's just a box with four buttons on it you can press to pick an output. there doesn't seem to be any quality loss from what i can tell. on the box it proclaims that it is "digital ready" (which doesn't make much sense from a technical perspective because composite and S-video weren't affected by the switch to digital). i presume it probably came out in the mid 2000's. overall a pretty neat little thing, my only gripe is it doesn't also let you switch between RF signals, but that's fine

i thought i'd look up what modern composite switch boxes look like, and they seem to be pretty much the same. i'm a bit surprised you don't need a power cable on modern ones (yeah, i know it's just passing through the connection, but i'd expect some unnecessary overengineering from modern tech because that's what the industry is now). by the way, here's an image listed for one of them. that's not an NES, and i don't think anyone's jumping on one of these because of the sega saturn
