@MarkBrigham@universeodon.com asks: Q2. Dedicated walk & roll (bike, inline skate, wheelchair, scooter) paths age and weather to the extent that they become punishing, if not dangerous, to ride. What steps have people taken to advocate for maintaining existing but dilapidated infrastructure so walk & rollers can enjoy it again, safely? #BikeNiteQ #BikeNite #BikeTooter #Cycling #MastoBikes cc @bikenite@fedigroups.social

@ascentale@sfba.social @MarkBrigham@universeodon.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social I bought a spray can of pavement marking paint and painted orange warning stripes around roots creating tall 2" bump, over 6" run. And complained to the city. Eventually (2-3 yrs) they brought in pavement grinding equipment to more or less flatten it.

@ascentale@sfba.social @MarkBrigham@universeodon.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A2 in Seattle orgs like Cascade Bicycle Club advocate for repairs through organized events and/or rides to report areas that need to be addressed (we have an app called Find it, Fix it), they (or volunteers) attend budget meetings to advocate for parts of the city budget and try to steer big impact improvements that are needed to make the infrastructure better and safer. Fixing tree root bulges, expanding trails where narrow, making new trails, etc.

@ascentale@sfba.social @MarkBrigham@universeodon.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social A2. Looking forward to answers here, there is a path running north from the stadium along the top of the creek levi that is splitting, they keep putting tar in the cracks to the point where I’m thinking a full suspension MTB bike might be the best way to traverse it. I’m not even clear who I would complain to. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @MarkBrigham@universeodon.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social A2: someone built an app called SnapSendSolve that filters your reports to the appropriate body, so you can just say "this paving here, photo(s), needs work" and they send it off to the council, utility, toll road, etc body responsible. That works pretty well, albeit with the usual delay you expect from infrastructure work (especially complete repaving). Occasionally urgent smaller stuff gets done same week. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @MarkBrigham@universeodon.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNIte A2. My husband, when he was chair of the Transportation Board (purely an advisory board, no power) commented at a board meeting on the big open cracks on one multi-use path near us. The next week, workers appeared and started filling the cracks. Which isn't as great as it sounds, since now, there are big filled lumps where the cracks used to be. I'm not sure if they're better or worse than the cracks. They haven't been back to fix the lumps.

  • @ascentale@sfba.social @MarkBrigham@universeodon.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social A2: This kind of maintenance has definitely become a bigger political issue lately around here. But there's been success in it, too, including things like bike-lane-specific street cleaners starting to show up. It's very much a public pressure kind of problem, but it's in a way that governments (at least around here) tend to understand if they see it. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @MarkBrigham@universeodon.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A2 I do not know, but there is a clear problem with many of the paths, they're created with one-off funds but then councils/states move on to the next "look at our X new km of bike paths" and no budget is allocated to maintenance of the increasing amount of old ones. The other source of "new paths" is major infrastructure projects where the project required to build a bike path along a freeway (for example), but then because it is on the road or rail reserve we find that the path _never_ undergoes maintenance because VicRoads/VicTrack just don't
