In engineering we say "Good, Cheap, Fast. Pick 2"'. AI is when you pick Fast twice.

@loucyx@mastodon.social This triangle can be used in any job related circumstances btw. If someone expects all 3 you can show them the triangle.

@loucyx@mastodon.social Quite a few people believe that with LLMs you can pick all three. It could be true under certain circumstances, but whatever that is, it's certainly not healthy and/or ethical. (e.g., being fast but unsustainable; being good only for the business but not for the users; being cheap by exploiting others)

@loucyx@mastodon.social Never confront a company with this. They don't want to hear it. They want all 3.

  • @loucyx@mastodon.social I never liked this framing, because the tradeoff space over the short and long term are very different. If you first focus on good, economies of scale make cheap possible and the lack of technical debt makes fast for future versions after the requirements have changed a lot much easier. If you start with fast and cheap, that can work in the short term but the only way to get to good is to abandon cheap. As technical debt accumulates, you end up losing both fast and cheap - you can't respond to changing requirements because of decisions you made a long time ago and you can't do cheap because you've accumulated too many inflexible small fixed costs.

A better way of wording it would be: > Engineers say "Good, Cheap, Fast. Pick Two"'. AI grifters pick Fast twice while convincing themselves they picked all three. But I'll not edit the post because I don't want to spam all the boosters with the change ๐Ÿ˜…
