While waiting to check in, a man was discussing a cancellation fee with the clerk. The man and i made eye contact and i jomed that the cancellation fee depends on how loud he gets about it. Man takes a beat and says to me: “ you can get loud. i am a black man in a hotel. If i get loud, i get shot” Timid chuckles. Man goes back to the waiting area. When i finished checking in, i reminded the desk clerk to please waive that mans cancellation fee. More timid chuckling. Later, encountering the man in the elevator, i asked how it went with the fee; they waived it! Please congratulate me on my deployment of white privilege. What a world.
