The US military is a giant corporate boondoggle and hit men for the fossil fuel industry, but it's politically important that America's self-perception as the world's unstoppable hyper-power never be deflated by actual events.
Biden's cardinal sin for some people was withdrawing from Afghanistan -- even though Trump negotiated and agreed to it -- because it forced people to reckon with the fact that decades of war had accomplished absolutely nothing except a price tag and a body count.

The thing is, the US military isn't meant to win wars. It couldn't fight one if it had to. All this talk about protecting Taiwan or whatever? It's bullshit. The US military is a paper tiger and everyone knows it. It's the loaded gun which Old Man America drunkenly points at the rest of the world. If we can't "solve" a problem with a naval blockade or by bombing civilians or sending a SEAL team to kidnap / assassinate a foreign leader, the US is out of ideas.
