The grey is logical, as it doesn't shift the colours of the art. If you are very brave, you could go for a metallised surface. Probably easiest as a wallpaper. Gold or bronze? Similar in effect but much more energy.
Not a flat surface though. Pitted, to avoid a mirror effect.
