I've heard that wrapping the stem with aluminum foil at ground level can help protect against them.
I still lost a couple this season with this, though. I blame my half-assed wrapping.

@wdormann@infosec.exchange I'm hoping that with the biological warfare that I'll be able to save these guys, but I may try the foil strips next year. Some have also suggested staking the zucchini plants to have them grow upwards to make it easier to inspect the base of the plant.
