Driving around Berkeley this week, i ended up driving the entirety of Arlington blvd from Alvarado Park up by San Pablo to where it ends at Marin ave. The boulevard winds along a hill face with a view of SF across the bay and is packed with all different kinds of houses. But also schools, shops, municipal facilities, parks, and all right on top of each other.
The thing that stood out most for me though was that it was an absolute pain in the butt to drive in our 4runner. I was wanting my bike the whole time. Slow speed limits, pedestrian crossings, janky medians, and stuff encroaching on the road for the entirety. The whole route was focused on people and people things and felt hostile to drivers. It was perfect.
