πŸ“ New blog post! Open source is becoming more challenging for me over time. I have written down some of my experiences and what I learned on my journey. Would love to hear what you think in the comments! https://antfu.me/posts/mental-health-oss

  • @antfu I have never worked so hard and held myself to near impossible standards as when I was doing open source full time. Take care of yourself and make sure you have a support system in place to tell you when things are bad, because it’s very difficult to see from the inside ❀️

@antfu It seems that a big part of the mental health issues come indirectly from there not being clear established procedures to attract and integrate skilled professionals other than coders into projects. As you mention, it's tough trying to not just be the lead dev, but also the community manager, project manager, marketing communications, customer service etc. At the same time, as someone in marketing and design, I often find it hard to make meaningful contributions in FOSS beyond an icon.

@antfu I developed symptoms of burnout for the first time at the age of 30. Then I realized that my brain no longer had the apparent unlimited bandwidth of my teen years. It is still able to do a good job, but it no longer likes being at 100% 24/7. So if you are nearing your 30s, my recommendation is to give that hyperactive brain a rest, at least a few hours per day, and find hobbies without screens that require using your hands more than your brain (woodworking, ceramics, gardening, etc.) πŸ€—πŸ’ͺπŸ™

  • @antfu Nice blog post! I also stumbled upon this message by my favorite runner today, on the topic of not doing too much, to our own benefit: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C4YaataN9HZ/
