As I wander around West Asheville, I am again reminded of the difference between being welcome, and belonging. And I say that as a strait (ish) old white dude.

@jack_daniel@mastodon.social my mom loves to tell the story of a rich man in charleston, SC. he moved there when he was 4. he became rich, gave huge amounts to local charities, had his name on various buildings in charleston. lived into his 80s. his eulogy started "though not a native charlestonian". yes. polite welcome is very much not all there is to belonging... the south can be very courteous and even gracious, but not really inclusive.
