Growing up in the US, everybody watched those, and often they were some of people’s favorite shows. But I realize that basically since the 2000s, I haven’t really watched any of the “normal” ones. Sitcoms I do watch and enjoy: Red Dwarf, Community, and Scrubs come to mind. But I also know that other than Scrubs, despite each having a fandom, they were perceived as “weird” or too niche by a lot of people. And like, if I meet someone and they say one of the “normal” sitcoms is their favorite show, they almost always turn out to be a person I find boring. 😅

@JoscelynTransient@chaosfem.tw Hm, i haven't watched broadcast tv in decades, so the last time i've seen any sitcoms was back then. I did see some, but none of the big names or ones i can remember enough to google up.

  • @JoscelynTransient@chaosfem.tw I've gone back and watched some that I missed when they were first aired. The Good Place comes to mind.

@JoscelynTransient@chaosfem.tw It's weird for me. I used to love HIMYM. Then it got so shitty I soured on it. And then I soured on the early seasons too, because it's a neverending parade of low-key queerphobia, and of basically painting a Nice Guy type, a borderline incel that objectifies women (but thinks he's one of the good ones because he regards women as objects that make babies, not objects to have casual sex with) as a hero. I liked Big Bang Theory for a short while. Then it turned out to be a parade of misogyny, toxic masculinity dressed up as nerd culture (but the show thinks it's ok because nobody is a jock) and just extremely basic nerdy jokes clearly intended for non-nerds who want to feel smart. Hmm, I am starting to see a pattern... Now to be fair, I still think Scrubs holds up super well. As does Golden Girls, which I discovered super late, literally just a few years ago. But yeah, I haven't watched any typical sitcoms in a while.

@JoscelynTransient@chaosfem.tw do take a look at Kevin Can F**k Himself, tho, for a fascinating inversion of all the sitcom tropes
