Do people on here watch “normal” sitcoms? Like, laughtrack and multicam and all that? Stuff that airs on broadcast television in the US or Europe? Examples I have in mind: Friends, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Full House, Two and a Half Men, etc.

@JoscelynTransient@chaosfem.tw Those are reruns. Half asleep people and those with dementia watch reruns.

  • Growing up in the US, everybody watched those, and often they were some of people’s favorite shows. But I realize that basically since the 2000s, I haven’t really watched any of the “normal” ones. Sitcoms I do watch and enjoy: Red Dwarf, Community, and Scrubs come to mind. But I also know that other than Scrubs, despite each having a fandom, they were perceived as “weird” or too niche by a lot of people. And like, if I meet someone and they say one of the “normal” sitcoms is their favorite show, they almost always turn out to be a person I find boring. 😅

  • @JoscelynTransient@chaosfem.tw Not as much as I used to. When I was in college, Big Bang Theory felt like a revelation because it was the first time we saw positive nerd rep on TV. Was it good nerd rep? No. Was it basically stereotypes in a blender? Yes. But it was better than literally nothing, which was what we had before. I've watched through HIMYM 1.5 times. The second time through was during surgery recovery and I picked up on a lot more of the queerphobic (especially transphobic) stuff and it gets pretty rank at times. Some moments are genuinely hilarious but some moments have me screaming at the TV and not in a good way. Community and Scrubs still hold up, I think, though they also feel a bit more tired these days. But I can't stand most of what's airing today. We mostly watch MST3K, Chinese and Korean dramas, or anime these days.
