I stopped myself just before telling someone this morning that “I don’t have the bandwidth for that right now.” I dislike using “bandwidth” that way, because it sounds like the kind of biz-speak I can’t stand—something a thinkfluencer would say to solutionize synergies in the thought-leader space… But it’s a succinct and apt metaphor, and it’s matter-of-fact and relatively non-judgmental compared to every other way I can think of to say that.

“I don’t have the time/energy/attention/focus for that,” “That’s not a priority,” “I’m too busy,” “I’m overwhelmed,” “Go away”… These all sound at least a little insulting, either to the person asking or to myself. What did we used to say before “bandwidth” became a thing?
