in the long history of technology companies/startups/projects in the Bay Area, there are afaict only really two kinds:
the kind where the point is to make money, and software is the means to that end
and the kind where the point is to make something cool, and money is the means

the former kind might get big, might become billion dollar companies and spawn billionaires the latter kind may make it big or it might go away, but it usually goes in the history books, if only the local ones, as something everyone loved
