The army finally lets the reporter take pictures of the town so we see piles of rubble everywhere. While driving back the reporter tells the army captain about all the war reporting she did and how tired she is of seeing ruins and the horrors of war.
He follows up on her maudlin reflections by asking her out to a bar, but she changes the subject.

So the reporter likes the chatty plant scientist more than the army dudes. She drives both of the plant scientists to a rubble pile for a first date. The chatty plant scientist says that the rubble pile used to be a granary that did not explode, and assumes that birds ate all the grain. All the grain. They did not miss a single grain.
