The reason he is upset is that he realizes that the only reason that the general who led this effort, the person who was the architect of the action that literally saved the world, that he, himself, his older self, that is... That the version of him a few years in the future who led the effort to save the world had died before he could see his efforts come to fruition. In his moment of victory, he learned of his own mortality, and immediately began grieving his untimely (?) death. 4/4 fin
