OMG, I just read a fanfic theory that Neil is actually Neil Barton, Katherine Barton's son.
Now my mind is totally blown.

The theory goes that, while his name is Max, it could be "Maximilien", in which case if you reverse it--keeping with the theme of the movie--his nickname could be "Neil". It's a bit of a stretch, but I really like it.
