I got started researching my dad's family after he passed away. He was adopted, and I ended up finding his living brother and an assortment of cousins living in Ontario.
That was a thrill, and we stay in touch.
So the initial purpose was going back a few generations just to get a sense of who the family is. And that is very direct.
Something happens when one goes back farther. It takes a different discipline that I'm working out.

@adventure_tense@mapstodon.space It's so rewarding though. Learning about your ancestors, especially when you also learn about the places and times they lived in, gives you an actual link to human history; personally, I find it makes me feel more connected to humanity as a whole, rather than just being a modern-day atom, bouncing around with no real connection. I know that doesn't matter to everyone, but it's grounding for me.
