Ok, I was fully prepared for this to be completely made up...and yet... it is true.
Fritz #Zwicky really did coin the phrases "dark matter" and "spherical bastards". What a froopy dude!

@MissConstrue@mefi.social Dark Matter is a discription, not a name. It cannot be seen, there's no there there, but effects whose cause resemble nothing except gravity are present. So 'the cause' needs to be dark, and it acts "like gravity" - like matter. Dark Matter isnt a solution, it's a call for help. The first largest need for a solution that doesnt exist yet, is outer stars somehow orbit galaxies at inner orbit speeds. This is not a criticism of science. Its a clarification of press reports.
