I haven't heard of urban zoning as a car brain tool. Then I see this map: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/35.360378/-120.843204 All houses, not a single shop. Is not even the alveolic cul-de-sacs, just a grid full of houses and no shops. My childhood neighborhood was like that grid. But we had a haberdasher 40m from home (shop in the garage), 2 convenience stores in the corner (both using the main room), a carpentry and a bakery (the owners of the latter lived in on a house build as second floor), [...] 1/

    ... a pharmacy 250m away (also main room), a bicycle repair man 200m away (garage + old stuff int their backyard), a lotto place + conv store 180m away (main room), a butcher and at least a couple of greengrocers not exactly sure where, a cobbler 250m, there used to be a supermarket but it closed (the owners opened the bakery, but not in the same place), a tyre shop 300m, and I can't remember were or how many, but surely people that mended clothes. 2/
