This is cool - the prolonged dry weather has revealed the outline of ‘The Great Parterre’ beneath the South Lawn at #Chatsworth. It was a #garden created for the 1st Duke of Devonshire around 1699 and it disappeared beneath a new landscape in the 1730s. The hot, dry conditions created contrast between the shallower-rooted turf and the original garden layout, and have allowed its spectacular swirling patterns to re-emerge.

@webidebi@mastodon.social My parents are mild mannered folk, but two of the people they reserve their worst words for are Capability Brown and Joseph Paxton, I think mainly for the ubiquity of their work. I know Chatsworth well. It would be interesting to see something of the first Duke's pre-romantic scheme in evidence in a little corner of the place, just for curiosity and imagination's sake.
