@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org A previous employer offered a generous stipend on cell phone service as one of the benefits. I never took it because I knew what was coming. One day global IT rolls out app-based authentication and I declined to put it on my phone. They said "well you take the stipend you need to install it" and I was almost gleeful in telling them that I did not and they would need to provide a device or come up with a secondary method. Suddenly TOTP access from a app of my choice was sufficient.

@vees@jawns.club @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I would love a stipend, then I could have two phones!

@vees@jawns.club @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I accidentally started a little revolution at a prior office (they did not even offer said stipend) because I refused to let them install anything. The next 3 people all said the same. They figured out email authorization pretty quick.

@vees@jawns.club @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org When my former employer tried to make us use our personal cell phones for company security authorizations, we told them we'd be happy to do that if they paid the cell phone bill. Believe it or not, they did. We all have free cell service.
