I finally remember why the way I code now feels familiar: it’s how I did it in grade school/middle school/high school. I would futz around with stuff, and thought it was somewhere between scribbling and practice, but not really programming. Programming was for serious things, people got paid for it, maybe I could but that was always “someday” and not a path I was on. Professional programmers have big workstations and futuristic shit on their ginormous screens. Not me, I just had Turbo C++ or ued.exe + make. I would type in code from library books, break it, fix it, maybe write a self-replicator. No stress, no fear of being left behind, just … what do I want to try next? Fast forward 30 years, and I have emacs + ant/make which is completely different from professional programmers that have agentic something-something running on composed clustered hivemind synorgasm Beowulf thingamabobs. I look up techniques from books that were mostly published in the 80’s/90’s, try it out. I am genuinely content with using and coding in the technology stack of 2006. Back to the no stress or fear of being left behind, just … What do I want to try next?
