The number of cases at the PETS conference in Canada where faculty are presenting because their students could not get a visa to attend (hi, I'm one of them!) is far higher than I expected. I didn't realize the extent to which this is not just a US problem these days.

@ricci@discuss.systems it always has been more than a US problem, and is one reason why I'm a bit leery of people saying that they will simply move their conferences here to canada or to europe (which can be very difficult for people from certain countries to enter) The denial rate for people who are from countries where IRCC requires a TRV visitor visa, rather than a eTA electronic travel authorization (which is most "western" countries) has always been much higher. Notably in 2024 IRCC changed things so that countries like Mexico which previously only needed an eTA, now require a TRV, and also revised things so that they are not automatically issuing 10 year multi entry TRV anymore
