In three announcements last Thursday, the Trump admministration signalled the end of democracy in the USA. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/jul/22/stephen-miller-marco-rubio-trump-speeches 'The presumption that US elections are legitimate died last week in Washington. It was 237 years old. It did not die of one wound. It died of three, inflicted in a single day, in daylight, on the record. And the country, running to the loudest of them, never examined the one most likely to kill.'

@leighelse@mastodon.nz This is a very good, but chilling, article. I couldn't help thinking that the attack on "leftwing political terrorism" especially by Miller, reminded me of Peter's recent "snivelling wokesters" comment. It is part of the same pattern of denigrating, labelling, and belittling someone who thinks differently to you. His comment is part of the some broad trend of the right to demonise perceived enemies. And we all know where that leads, don't we? Chilling indeed.

@leighelse@mastodon.nz 61 years of democracy, since the Voting Rights Act of 1965 said that *All* adult citizens had the right to vote regardless of race.
