Oh goodie, the Engadget version of the story even “hints” at a Mafia-style “protection” racket at the end.
“[Hugging Face, the AI company attacked by the AI] also said that protecting an online platform these days includes using AI for defense. OpenAI pretty much echoed those sentiments and said that it expects AI-driven security breaches to "become more commonplace with the proliferation of increasingly cyber-capable models."”
So basically: Nice server you’ve got there, sure would be a shame if anything happened to it… but don’t worry, we can protect you from the threat of us! Now let’s talk money. 🔥💵💶💴🔥

Just for the record: I do not accept the framing that the AI “did this by itself”. It’s a computer that did what its programmers gave it the abilities to do, whether they understood their own instructions or not. The humans at OpenAI are 100% responsible, but it’s beneficial for them if we buy into this notion that the AI is an entity that could somehow share in the culpability.
