All this to say that when I leave here on Wednesday, I will breathe a sigh of relief that is very different from the tears I shed when I left in May of 2025 with my belongings as I separated from my husband of nearly 18 years. Instead of having an anchor in Palm Springs (of a partner, of a property), I will be free to redefine my relationship with this very gay town and build new meaning for myself when I come back to visit. On my own terms. Unburdened by the past.
At least this is my hope.
