As another thing I noted, the print head height appears to matter a lot. I had always assumed the loadcell based height detection would pretty much take care of it, but I was getting random cases of bed leveling errors. After some forum reading, I got a hint to loosen the thumb screws that hold the nozzle and bring it down like maybe less than a millimeter. And voila, the bed leveling no longer takes forever.
