my completely uneducated guess is that when you're running OSX or Windows on one of these, it uses some kinda jack detection to determine where to send the audio, and ALSA just simply exposes all the output options to the end user and doesn't depend on that
your mileage may vary but it seems like on my setup the correct setting is to select port Line Out and profile Analog Stereo Output

@vxo@digipres.club This is exactly what happens on it, the Apple written audio driver just hides the magic. It's not that unique to modern laptops that often have a buttload of audio out options, like HDMI, 3.5mm jack, SPDIF, speakers etc.
