@vxo@digipres.club This is exactly what happens on it, the Apple written audio driver just hides the magic. It's not that unique to modern laptops that often have a buttload of audio out options, like HDMI, 3.5mm jack, SPDIF, speakers etc.

    @apzpins@some.apz.fi I vaguely remember the Apple devices of this era having a really turbo funky 1/8" jack where it's TRS for stereo audio out but might also be TRRS for headsets-- but either way it can also accept a flavor of TOSLINK connector that has no square surround and just inserts there. It's really funky when the driver gets confused and starts turning on the optical transmitter when it's not warranted to do so... you get a weird little red pinspot shining out the jack!
