The funny thing about Mullvad is that a VPN product is a promise to keep you safe. Protect me, don’t let the state or some corporation see what I’m doing. Then the cofounder funds a fascist party into the mainstream; and not small money, but enough to move them from the fringe to somewhere on the national scene. The blog response this week: “We need a diversity of voices” Like. Please. Stop. That’s something you say on a panel or podcast, not as a way to keep supporting the kind of people who want to surveil, deport, and punish the kind of people your product claims to protect. When the rubber hits the road, their morals are as soft as everyone else’s and no one sees the irony. Maybe not a good decision, they say, but “diversity of voices.” Case closed. Please move on.This is upsetting us at HQ! We’ve had to think about this for three weeks already! Their marketing sold a spine that the business clearly does not have. It’s disappointing, but a business isn’t its marketing, it’s what the money does when nobody’s watching. And nobody was going to do anything. It’s private, there is no board to vote him out, or any structure to enforce any consequences. That move is up to you and your wallet. So: good product maybe, bad business. Not run on principle, run on plausible deniability. A bit sad but spend thirty minutes and find something else, go do one of @JulianOliver@mastodon.social’s courses when they open up.

Seamless and I haven’t noticed any degradation in service. I hope enough people do what I did so a strong message is sent to #mullvad.

@diemkay@hachyderm.io Yep. The problem is that humans trust by default based on very little, and once that's established it's hard for people to reassess if it means doing anything at all. As you put it, "move on" rather than almost anything else. Sociopaths and businesses (which are sociopathic entities) have exploited this forever and we still trust to easily and don't adjust quickly enough. Moving to another provider doesn't change this unf. @JulianOliver@mastodon.social
