One of them moved back into the hallway like the air hadn't changed. Like whatever just happened was already behind them, something to process later or not at all.
The other caught your eye on the way out with a look that was meant to say something, to reach for you, to make sure you knew they felt it too.
You have held this before.
Not just this moment.
Not just this room.
A career's worth of moments and rooms.

The version where someone in that room has a feeling they don't know what to do with and you become the place they put it. Where your presence gets drafted into service the moment their discomfort needs somewhere to land. Where the expectation isn't stated because it doesn't have to be. It has always just been true that you would make this easier. That you would receive what they were feeling and carry it long enough for them to feel less alone in it.
