Once upon a time if you were in the UK and you searched for "Los Angeles weather" on Google, you'd get the current weather with the temperature in sensible celcius. Add "f" to the end and Google was smart enough to give you the temps in freedom degrees (useful for talking to friends in that area).
I just tried it and just got AI slop about the average temperatures in March.
We need to rewind the whole tech industry about 5 years and just start again. This time without the bullshit.

@joeress@mastodon.social I find it so frustrating. Google used to work like an extended memory for me - I could fire off 'kitchen sink' queries around half-remembered factoids and it'd give me what I was looking for, or the thing would at least be in the first page or two. Now, it decided what it thinks I mean and gives me a page of near-identical, wrong results based on things like location (which isn't even correct because my IP is in a major city miles away) and/or popularity and not my niche interests.

@joeress@mastodon.social I went back to lycos until they changed it last year. I have been using Ecosia with decent success.
