And after a tight but manageable connection at Poznań Główny I boarded the Berlin-Warszawa Express. I ended up sharing a compartment with a charming Mexican-American family who had been visiting Gdańsk and were heading for a trip to Berlin. And after a few days, they were going on to Copenhagen by train. So I gave them the requisite warnings about the ECE from Hamburg to Copenhagen, and explained that yes, you could get hamburgers in Hamburg. There’s a McDonald’s in the station an’all. Finally we made it to the other Frankfurt—see this thread for the obligatory jokes—and followed the crowd to the Ersatzbus. The boarding process was typically German: i.e. absolute chaos. When I mentioned I was going to do this trip, a friend promised me it would be an interesting experience in a DB Intercity-branded Double Decker coach. Sadly, it was not to be, but I am in a rather nice Mercedes “VIPBUS” instead. As rail replacement busses go, it’s pretty good!

Wonder of wonders, a DB-organised Rail Replacement Bus service was 35 minutes early! This means that I managed to get the 15:04 ICE 556 to Köln Hbf. Which was delayed, naturally. This a lovely venerable ICE 2 called Bautzen/Budyšin, and I am finally able to order some lunch, and enjoy the 5 hours of train ahead of me…
