Spent the day yesterday checking out the frescoe covered churches in Veria. Highlights were the Old Metropolitan and the Church of the Resurrection. The first had some of the best frescoes I've seen since Serbia and the later has both frescoes and a floor made up of spolia. One of the stones featured multiple Nine Men's Morris boards on it. I also visited the local archeology museum.

Some from the old metropolis which has many intact depictions of saints and a very expansive series lining the top of the building taken from the death and resurrection of Christ. The present structure is dated to the 11th century due to the presence of a main entrance inscription containing the name of the founding bishop from that time. The frescoes are 13th c and were both marred and preserved due to the church being converted to mosque in the Ottoman period and plastered over.
