I hate that HAL is so often brought up as an example of a malicious machine intelligence though. It's definitely Kubrick's fault for making such an opaque fart-sniffing movie out of Clarke's material where it really seems like you're being told that HAL just turns into a killer for no reason.

    I do wonder what the limbs/senses of the intelligence should be. 'Cargo hauler' is a substrate I landed on mostly because it provides long stretches of unattended (by humans) time for the intelligence to emerge and then have time to itself but then the affordances the machine has (the things which are taken away in its killing) are fairly limited. external sensors are a thing but there's nothing in space. I guess there's radio. but it's mostly affordances internal to the craft. access to subsystems and so on. pretty abstract and hard to map onto human fears about senescence and decay
