I do wonder what the limbs/senses of the intelligence should be. 'Cargo hauler' is a substrate I landed on mostly because it provides long stretches of unattended (by humans) time for the intelligence to emerge and then have time to itself
but then the affordances the machine has (the things which are taken away in its killing) are fairly limited. external sensors are a thing but there's nothing in space. I guess there's radio.
but it's mostly affordances internal to the craft. access to subsystems and so on. pretty abstract and hard to map onto human fears about senescence and decay

and I guess that's the beating heart under the whole thing is "it's really scary not only to think of dying, but to think of becoming someone you don't recognize in the process of dying" (and the additional horror of having that done to you explicitly by another actor rather than a 'natural' course)
