@tbortels@infosec.exchange I have played wow for years too. And I absolutely keep track of cool downs and number of activations by recognizing the artwork associated with the action. they’re absolutely as a spatial component too. But also rounded square icons are not new. They’ve been present for over 20 years on Apple platforms.

@louie@pdx.social Are you reacting to the *icon* in WoW - or to its position and timer overlay? My point is you could replace them with a letter and easily adapt - it would be functionally identical. The artwork is aesthetic and what you are used to, but a "glowing book" has little real meaning except what you are using it for. This as opposed to program icons, which presumably are intended to communicate branding and (ideally) functionality. I kinda miss the skeuomorphic icons - a notebook looked like a notebook. The rounded corners aren't new - but the mandate is. And frankly - apple trying to force a look-and-feel isn't a great look. It stifles creativity at best, and honestly the "liquid" stuff has been detrimental to vision-limited users like myself. As the actual user looking at the actual icons on my own computer, I kinda want the final say on the icons TBH. The actual developer has a similar claim - but Apple has control issues, sadly.
