I'm getting really sick of #AI culture and hype. It can be useful as a tool, but the people running the corporations providing the LLMs, like Anthropic and OpenAI, are the real reason it's toxic. And the toxicity is spreading. They direct people to train models on copyrighted data without compensation and push for more environmentally-damaging data centers. They are the ones giving CEOs excuses to replace people with automated tools. They are the enemy, not the technology itself.

@jonyoder@mstdn.social nah, the technology itself is explicitly fascist.

@jonyoder@mstdn.social I've got a very strong feeling that layoffs that had the replacement of junior/trainee staff with AI in mind will become a disaster in 2-3 years for any company that tries this. I have a similar feeling that the layoffs at large hyper scaler outfits were not primarily to replace staff with AI but rather to gain the necessary liquidity to keep investing in the rampant data center expansion.

@jonyoder@mstdn.social The expectations are ridiculous. They know it's not intelligence. The "agentic" movement formed in less than a year with the obvious (and now even openly stated) goal of plugging existing tools into a chatbot...to make it look like the LLM is doing something besides language translation. LLMs can just barely be cajoled into calling a tool with the right parameters (fortunately not dissimilar to a language translation task), then the "AI" gets credit for everything the tool did.

@jonyoder@mstdn.social you lost me at "it can be useful as a tool"
