Want to do something about smoke from Canadian wildfires? You can't. You're already in the FO part of FAFO and as far as I know no one can do anything about them, they will continue being at least this bad for the rest of our lives. By "no one" I mean that even if the Canadian government somehow stopped being completely dominated by resource extractors, I don't think that they could do anything now. This wasn't true maybe 20 years ago. But, you know -- that was then, and this is now.

I'm not saying that people should do nothing. There are worse and worse losses that will continue and we should try to stop them. But after telling people that we have 30 years to do something for 30 years, and with nothing being done, it's dishonest to say that sure we can fix everything now.

@richpuchalsky@mastodon.social This is pretty defeatist, but that doesn't mean it's wrong. The optimist in me says that we shouldn't be the only ones Finding Out, and *that* is within our power.
