"Du er ikke en grænsekontrol" (you are not a border control) I tell her, "Dette er en regel hos Stena Line" she replies So we de facto have the ferry company acting as a border control There is no legitimate reason a ferry company can need any information other than to prove I am who I say I am on my ticket - when I am sailing from one EU country in Schengen to another (Denmark to Sweden)

  • @jon@gruene.social One reason could be that they have training to validate certain ID’s and those are the ones they accept, or? Like it’s not about exactly about the country, but just they need a list of approved ID types for practical reasons. Can’t exactly be the first time a German driver uses these ferries of course, so even then it seems a bit stupid. But maybe not nefarious?

@jon@gruene.social I’ve had the same nonproductive discussion with Finnlines ferry staff in Malmö.

@jon@gruene.social it's a government requirement that they check documents. It's the same logic where many countries mandate that hotels check your passport, but not the grocery store.

  • Afaik a German drivers licence is not a valid ID outside of Germany.
