My #bike chain got replaced today. It was new in February when I replaced the whole drive train. So even though I wiped and oiled it every week, that chain was worth only about 4-5 months... Maybe 2000km? 9-speed, if that matters. How often do you replace your chains? #biketooter #cycling #bicycle #fedibikes

@dcz@fosstodon.org I think my 9-speed chains (Shimano CN-HG93) last about 4k km before they stretch beyond 0.75%

@dcz@fosstodon.org I get about 2000km on my MTB (lots of sand & muck) and about 4000km on a road bike. That's just regular chain oil, cleaned properly if mucky, just wiped if not. Your mileage feels a bit on the low value side, could be the chain or the weather or residual grinding muck. A new 9 speed chain is still winning at the cheapest transport option though! @dcz@fosstodon.org I have 2 waxed (9 sp) chains that I swap between. I'm just coming up to 10,000 km on the bike computer, but there were some more km before it. The chain checker is currently not showing any noticeable wear. Prior to learning about waxing, I was eating through the chains on my old 7-speed, because of the salty water and sandy soil of the lakes I ride around. Wearing out chains, and cassettes, and wheel bearings, and socks (from the oily chain mess stains) and oil, and rags. Now with wax, it's just check wheel bearings and decrease if needed. Waxed chain stays clean and lasts.
